ATLAS is Metaboly's flagship gut microbiome mapping service — part of the EquiBIOME suite. It uses deep bacterial sequencing of a single fecal sample to characterize the microbial community of the equine hindgut: what is present, in what proportions, and how the overall pattern compares against reference ranges built from equine-specific data.
The hindgut is the engine of equine nutrition and immune tolerance. The bacterial community within it determines how a horse extracts energy from forage, maintains gut wall integrity, and responds to stress, disruption, or dietary change. Most horses move through their entire lives with this community unmeasured and unmapped — and owners make decisions accordingly.
ATLAS changes that. A single test establishes a true biological baseline. Repeated over time — after diet changes, antibiotic courses, management transitions, or health events — it builds a longitudinal record that makes change visible and easy to interpret.
In practice: say a horse starts a course of antibiotics. A baseline ATLAS test beforehand, followed by a second test a few weeks later, shows exactly how the gut community shifted and whether it's recovering — instead of just watching manure and hoping.

Your collection kit ships with a specialized sample preservation solution and complete instructions. Everything required is included — no additional materials or veterinary coordination needed.
Sample Collection
Collect a solid sample from freshly passed manure using the preservation tube provided. ATLAS does not use rectal swabs — swabs only capture surface microbes near the anus, which are not representative of the true hindgut community. No veterinary visit is required.
Sequencing & Analysis
Returned samples undergo deep bacterial sequencing and bioinformatic analysis against our equine-specific microbial reference database — built specifically for the horse, not adapted from human datasets.
Results Delivered to Your Portal
A comprehensive report is delivered to your Metaboly portal within 4–7 weeks of sample receipt, linked to your horse's record and available for comparison against all future orders.
