CARTAโ„ข

Comprehensive Analysis of Reproductive Assemblages

CARTA maps the mare's reproductive microbiome from a single vaginal swab โ€” giving breeders and veterinarians access to a biological layer that routine reproductive protocols do not reach, and that serious programs recognize as essential.

The reproductive environment, mapped.

CARTA characterizes the vaginal microbial environment of the mare and provides a depth of reproductive biological context that conventional reproductive protocols were not designed to deliver. It is built for breeding programs that expect more from the data available to them.

This is not a generic wellness service. CARTA is a specialized microbiome-based reproductive offering built specifically for mares and breeding management โ€” part of Metaboly's EquiBIOME suite, alongside ATLAS.

CARTA uses deep bacterial sequencing of a vaginal swab to map the microbial community of the reproductive tract: what organisms are present, at what relative abundance, and how the overall pattern compares to reference populations drawn from mares across a range of reproductive contexts and outcomes.

The reproductive environment is more than anatomy and timing.

Breeding programs are managed around timing, hormone response, cycle monitoring, and visible reproductive findings. These are the right things to track. But the reproductive environment also carries a microbial dimension that most breeding management never touches โ€” one that shifts with cycle stage, treatment history, reproductive events, and systemic health, and that may carry meaningful biological signal.

The vaginal and vestibular microbiome is a dynamic system. In mares, this microbial layer has been associated with variation in reproductive tract health and stability. Yet it is almost never profiled as part of routine breeding management โ€” even in programs where outcomes are inconsistent and the conventional picture is clean.

CARTA was built to make that layer accessible. It does not replace existing reproductive management. It adds the biological depth that existing management cannot provide on its own.

Why culture leaves most of the picture invisible.

The standard approach in most reproductive laboratories is to swab the vaginal canal and attempt to grow the collected microorganisms on culture plates. When those plates come back clean โ€” no pathogenic growth detected โ€” the conventional interpretation is that the mare appears reproductively healthy. For mares that continue to fail despite clean culture results, that interpretation offers nothing new.

The limitation is structural. A large proportion of the microbial community living in the reproductive tract cannot be cultured under standard laboratory conditions at all. These organisms are real, biologically active, and potentially meaningful โ€” but conventional culture is simply incapable of detecting them. A clean culture result does not confirm that the microbial environment is balanced or unremarkable. It confirms only that the organisms capable of growing on a plate were not present in high abundance.

CARTA operates on a fundamentally different principle. Rather than attempting to grow organisms, sequencing works directly from the DNA captured on the swab โ€” including DNA from organisms that culture would never recover. From trace genetic material, sequencing identifies what is present, at what relative abundance, and how the overall community compares to reference profiles from mares across a range of reproductive contexts and outcomes.

Where CARTA delivers the most value

Establish a reproductive baseline

Map the mare's reproductive microbial environment before change, challenge, or intervention reframes the picture. A baseline only has meaning when something to compare it against exists.

Add biological depth to breeding decisions

Bring a new layer of information into a reproductive picture that has traditionally been dominated by timing, hormone response, and visible findings alone. Higher-stakes decisions deserve more complete data.

Investigate recurrent inconsistency

When reproductive outcomes have been inconsistent and conventional workup has not produced a clear answer, the microbial environment is a dimension worth characterizing โ€” and one that culture cannot access.

Track change across seasons

Repeated sampling distinguishes a one-off result from a meaningful pattern. Longitudinal data makes the reproductive microbiome an evolving record rather than a single data point.

Support serious broodmare management

Built for mares where reproductive consistency, clarity, and confidence carry real stakes โ€” not as a routine screen, but as the kind of deeper biological record that protects valuable reproductive histories.

Build records that inform future decisions

Every CARTA result is stored in your Metaboly portal and linked to the mare's record. The more complete the biological record, the more informed the decisions that follow.

Built for deeper biological visibility

CARTA dashboard preview showing reproductive stability index, microbial diversity, inflammatory balance, and longitudinal reproductive metrics

Every CARTA result lives in your Metaboly portal as an interactive, longitudinal record. The dashboard gives you instant visibility into reproductive stability metrics, microbial diversity, inflammatory balance, and key reproductive indicators โ€” all the context you need to understand what your mare's reproductive microbiome is telling you.

Minimal collection. Maximum biological depth.

CARTA is designed to integrate into real breeding programs without adding complexity to them. The collection process is low-burden โ€” and everything required is included in the kit.

01

Preorder the kit

Preorders are open now through September 1, 2026. Kit rollout begins September 1, 2026. Your CARTA collection kit ships with a preservation vial and complete instructions โ€” everything required for collection is included.

02

Collect the vaginal swab sample

CARTA uses a vaginal swab from the caudal vagina and vestibule โ€” a low-risk, straightforward procedure that can be performed without veterinary instrumentation in most mares. Full instructions are included with the kit. Collection at estrus is preferred but not required.

03

Return the sample

The collection vial contains a preservation reagent that stabilizes microbial DNA at the point of collection. The sample ships at ambient temperature โ€” no ice, no special handling, no veterinary coordination required.

04

Sequencing and analysis

Returned samples undergo deep bacterial sequencing and bioinformatic analysis against our reproductive-specific equine reference dataset โ€” built from mares across a range of reproductive contexts, not adapted from other species.

05

Results delivered to Metaboly

A comprehensive report is delivered to your Metaboly portal and permanently linked to the mare's record. Available for longitudinal comparison across future orders โ€” each result building on the last.

The reproductive picture just became more complete.

CARTA is for breeders and mare owners who are no longer satisfied with a reproductive picture built on timing alone โ€” and who want the biological depth that serious programs are beginning to treat as standard.
